Who has the most 140 inventory? The answer used to be clear, of course Daimler AG, with a total of 432,741 examples rolling out of their factory. No one knows the answer today but Mercedes-Benz themselves isn’t one of the major 140 shareholder anymore. You might think that since they built so much, it would be reasonable to keep some, but the fact goes against common sense. This article will list the past and present known inventory of Mercedes-Benz Classic Center.
Since VIN serial numbers are considered informative, this list is sorted by the serial number, the last 6 digits of the VIN rather than the date they entered the Mercedes Classic Center and Museum. All information does not represent the latest status of the vehicles involved and is for reference only.
Nr.1 1991 600 SEL

It would have made sense if Mercedes-Benz kept the first of the production series, or put the prototype into a museum, but they didn’t. They may have been frantically looking for the first 190 SL, but the first 140 and even the first 200 of 140 were definitely thrown in the trashbin. For quite some time, the Classic Center didn’t even have the pre-facelift in stock, so that when they realized the pre-facelift could appear on behalf of the S-Class at the launch of the latest S-Class, a used car had to be accquired somewhere else.

This lucky 600 SEL is in 199 Pearl Black, and it looks similar to the A000016 that once appeared in earlist press photos, except with a touch of exotic. The car was delivered new to France, so it has amber headlights and a less typical beige velour interior. It appeared before the launch of W 222, the earliest images of which were taken in 2012, and was probably acquired around that time.
A033376 subsequently appeared at many S-Class related press events, a low mileage car that could be driven with confidence. It is a good choice to represent the 140 in pearl black 600 SEL, just like the license plate in the earliest studio photo. It really pays tribute to S-KT 4186, but the French element is a little weird. You can find the amber light on 2012 pictures, but it then removed. The Classic Center should probably be honest about admitting that this car is from France and keeping it French.

Nr.2 1994 VaMP

The driverless passenger car (VaMP for short) was one of the first automobiles considered to be autonomous at the time. The vehicles could travel in traffic over a certain distance with some human intervention, using computer vision to detect moving obstacles such as other vehicles, automatically avoid them or overtake them when cleared.

A total of two 140s were converted to the VaMP. The VaMP and VITA-2 projects pioneered many hardware and software concepts that are essential for autonomous robots. They left a big impression on many observers and heavily influenced robot car research and funding decisions worldwide.
A081551’s completion year is listed as 1994, but it was built on a 1992 500 SEL. The silver VaMP has been on display at Munich’s Deutsches Museum since 2006, but we seem to have seen it in a photo of the Classic Center’s storage, so it’s included in this list. Strictly speaking, as an exhibit, it represents an epoch-making technological attempt, not the S-Class.

Nr.3 1993 500 SEL Sonderschutz

Before the Classic Center acquired A033376, their only pre-facelift stock is the panzer once used by former chancellor Helmut Kohl. This Sonderschutz was the official car sponsored by Mercedes-Benz to Kohl from 1993 to 1998, just like the 126 they previously sponsored. Kohl was given a newer panzer before he retired and the car naturally returned to its home as Mercedes property.

Since it was retired in early 1998, it can be said that it was the first 140 to enter the Classic Center collection. Its appearance hasn’t changed much since then, at least not in a positive direction. This car has over 430,000 kilometers of use and it has a lot of age, as well as some missing and incorrect parts. For now it retains the facelift’s raditator grille and turn signals, as well as Kohl’s typical additional fog lights. Who says Stuttgart people don’t have vanity? They didn’t even install a facelift headlight on this car, but used the most economical method to refresh the chancellor’s car.
The delaminated Isoclima windshield, missing parts, and incorrect details make the A151813 look a little sad. However, Classic Center may have shown enough kindness by not donating it to the BKA shooting range or storing it in an open parking lot.

Nr.4 1995 S 600

Before the G 500 was launched in 1999, Schwarzenegger wasn’t so tied to Mercedes-Benz, but he spontaneously purchased a silver 1995 S 600 as personal ride. According to official and unofficial accounts, Schwarzenegger used this V12 from 1995 to 2003, after that he sold it to a neighbor. His neighbor later sold the car to Classic Center. It is also one of the Classic Center’s earlier collections of 140, having been at the museum since at least 2008.
The car doesn’t look that original, on the exterior aspect it gets shiny Lorinser wheels and front fender trim. In the past decade, it has never attended any serious launch event on behalf of the S-Class, and has spent more time lying quietly in museums. Perhaps the romance with the governor was viewed by the Classics Center as simply to add curiosity to the museum. Regardless there is one undeniable display: it was the only non-armored V12 in the classic center for a long time. As the most important market for the 140, US cars are always overlooked, and although it’s not that original, it’s better than nothing Amercian in the museum.

Finally it’s the coupe’s turn. Bruno Sacco complained in private about his dissatisfaction with the sedan’s design, but publicly praised the coupe and actually used it as a daily driver. This 1997 CL 500 opts for a modest V8, but has supreme Designo details. Examples include the special paint PF 724 supplied by Bollig & Kemper GmbH & Co KG and the leather texture on the A/C air vents, which is his favorite color combination.

After a few years of his service, A346386 returned to the hands of the Classic Center, however it has not been seen in public since the mid-2000s and it also missed the lanuch of the C 216 in 2006. It may be buried somewhere deep in the Classic Center warehouse, or it may no longer be the property of the Classic Center.
When you first see the coupe in such late serial number range, you may already know that Classic Center unfortunately did not retain any of the pre-facelift coupe, the original design. The C 140 itself is an almost forgotten model and the rarest production body from the 60s-90s, about which we can’t expect too much.

This is a coupe that may only shortly existed in the Classic Center. Its appearance also implies that Bruno Sacco’s former A346386 perhaps has withdrawn from the Classic Center’s lineup. When the C 216 was launched in 2006, what appeared in the family portrait was not the other two 140 coupes that were supposed to be there, but a stranger. This is a 1998 CL 600 and it does have some special attributes such as Designo 026 Sea Blue paint. But what’s really special about it is that it’s not a property of the Classic Center in the traditional sense, the car appears to be a used car that the Classic Center acquired from a user in Stuttgart.

A424093 appears to be a low mileage car, after all it was 2006, only 8 years from new. Except for the C 216 photo set, it has not been publicly unveiled subsequently, but it was produced as a 1/18 car model by NOREV in 2020. For details, see “Impression: Norev’s 1/18 CL 600”. Maybe it was just hidden somewhere. Deep in the warehouse where it is difficult to take out.

When main production work on the 140 at Halle 46 ended in August 1998, the museum documented receiving the keys of 2 cars. The front row in the photo shows a silver sedan with North American specs, however what we see at a later date in the museum is a different European model, a 1998 S 320.

It’s somewhat bizarre to include the 1998 S 320 as an exclusive option in the collection. Remember when the 140 was discontinued, Classic Center didn’t even have any non-armored 140s left. If you can only keep one, why the S 320? And it comes with bland black leather and equipment. A432120 was not the last 140 to roll off, but it was so lucky and became the most important 140 in the Classic Center later.
Youngtimer was a despised group in the 2000s, and there wasn’t much opportunity to commemorate 140 or even 126, unless a new successor was released. In 2005, A432120 appeared in a family photo of the 221 launch, and it has since received many more photos. When the 222 was released, the Classic Center finally realized it was no longer suitable to endorse the 140 and replaced it with A033376. Recent detail photos show that its driver’s seat has some wear, this car may have been well used.

The Classic Center doesn’t have any pre-facelift coupes, but there was already a third facelift. Why do they need so many? This CL 500 was hidden away for a long time, but finally emerged without incident. It was transferred to the museum along with A432120 when the 140 was discontinued in August 1998, but did not make its first public appearance until 2019.

Similar to the A432120, Obsidian Black’s A432046 isn’t built to outlandish specs, even modestly. As the first coupe received by the Classic Center, it was supposed to attend the C 216 launch or other classic events, but there has been no news since its delivery. So much so that it was considered expelled from the Classics Center long ago. When it appeared at the “The Pioneers of Mercedes Safety Technology” event in 2019, it perfectly recreated to the media how the first generation ESP worked properly. The odometer reading is about 2940 kilometers, which is also a low mileage car.

Nr.9 2000 S 600 Pullman Guard

Like Helmut Kohl’s official car, the Classic Center has a tradition of preserving political vehicles. Mercedes-Benz AG has its own fleet of lease cars, usually armored special cars, when they take back ownership after being out of service they can decide which cars make sense to stay, one of the cars saved to the end of the fleet is this Pullman produced in 2000.

A432737 was the one of the last Pullman and one of the last 140 produced. It was initially delivered to the BKA for use by VIPs visiting Germany, and was also leased to other European authorities. The last operational record is probably a long-term lease to the Hungarian Köztársasági Őrezred, where it remained for a long time under Stuttgart license plates. When the 221 Guard launched, it appeared at the media test site instead of Kohl’s 140 panzer, and that was its final appearance. It has since been featured neither in museums nor at media events. Despite the low mileage, the car may currently be experiencing technical difficulties.

The 140 was the relaunch of the Pullman after the W 100. Only 26 of the S 600 Pullman Guard were produced, much less than the W 100, so it’s certainly worth keeping one. It’s a shame this car hasn’t been shown in public yet, it definitely deserves some presence.

A bit advice
The Classic Center has about as many 140s as I currently have. I have also been very cautious about the duplication and lack of collection attributes for a long time. In my opinion, the 140 lineup of the Classic Center needs some adjustments. Since their cars are mainly used for exterior display, it is actually easier than mine to balance all aspects of the car without considering the interior. The following are my suggestions:
- Increase the number of pre-facelifts. There are 9 in total, only 3 of them are pre-facelifts, and only 1 of them is a civilian car. If possible, add at least a pre-facelift coupe.
- Increase color diversity. Except for the Sacco coupe, the current inventory only has two color themes: black and silver. 140 is from the last colorful era and can add bright colors.
- Add market version. The US and Japanese markets are important for the 140 era, at least the Japanese version is completely ignored for now. In the 90s, Japan emerged as one of the most important markets for the S-class.
- Add model ranges. Currently 8-cylinder and 12-cylinder are the main ones, but the 140 has many interesting attributes, such as being the last S-Class with a manual transmission, or the possibility of collecting a diesel taxi.
Each of the above elements can be superimposed, such as introducing a US-spec 1992 300 SD in 888 Beryl, which can satisfy the all 4 suggestions above at the same time. Overall, it’s a pity not to be able to see the earliest 140 or prototypes anymore, but more 140s are always great to see.
